How can you do that? I dont understand it.

If you have a problem with your mum you deal with it.. with your mum!

You just don't walk in to a school and begin to open fire at everyone, especially not little children

            I know Brummie.

I'm not a vengeful person, but I am so angry. The minute I heard, I called my mum and said I don't care if my kids are asleep (they are at Granny's tonight) wake them, I need to tell them I love them.

The gunman's partner and her friend are missing too apparently, what a sick sick puppy!

We had this here in Dunblane not so long ago. It would NOT happen if they had sensible gun laws. There is no place for guns in a civilised society, IMO, and it's about time the US became one.

Absolute madness - literally. Too many Americans don't live in the real world, and can't tell the difference between a real gun and a Playstation handset.

The children are in a safe place now - as Sapphire says, it's the bereaved families and the whole community that are now suffering the consequences of the right to bear arms.

Terrible terrible thing, there was another as well again in America in a Mall I read that the mall staff are "trained" on how to "cope" in the event of a mass shooting, but how the hell do you do that in a school.

Why would a teacher of young children and a mother of a supposedly mentally disturbed son have 3 totally lethal weapons in her name and in her home?

                        completely agree Eniad!

Why would someone be that stupid, that is the living proof of the old parent's joke "Oh the baby's ok. He's in the kitchen with the sharp knives and fireworks!"

I cannot begin to imagine the helplessness those teachers felt when faced with a madman intent on killing anything that moved, or the sheer terror of standing outside my kids school hearing yours survived, yours didnt.

Something needs doing over there, I know their constitution gives them the right to bear arms, thats the RIGHT not the obligation. Surely a test like we have, mental capacity security of home, rather then the ability to sit their twiddling their thumbs and think I know.. I want a gun!!

Also, and its a bit of a curveball I know, but last night's American Dad.. well BBC3 need to hang their heads in shame! They announced the tragedy, then put on an episode where the dad bought the son a gun for xmas, then they went out shooting a machine gun at random objects culminating in an all out shoot out and massacre! In very bad taste atm imo.

All of this is heartrendingly true - if only we could make it not to have happened.

But your point, Bill-K, goes further. Apparently gunman "suffered from autism" (words of newsman). One of my children is autistic and chilling though it is to say I am 100% certain that, if during the time of teenage angst (thankfully largely past), this beloved child of mine had had access to guns/automatic weapons, I would now be dead, as would many others. One of the features of autism for some people is both an inability to distinguish between fantasy and "reality" and an inability to see the consequences of one's actions as permanent (irreversible). Also the levels of anxiety with over-stimulation become uncontrollable. Not making excuses for gunman BTW - but why did he have access to guns?

Equally chilling and sort of connected - saw a bit of telly the other night and there was a prog about the use of drones by USA (and UK) for warfare. It was just like playstation. They were sitting in front of screens zapping villages in the Middle East then going home to supper. Death of children referred to as "collateral damage". Cold attitude referred to as "professionalism".

                          The world is not sane.

That has been denied by the school but early reports suggested that she was a supply teacher at the school. I think this was incorrect information. The right to cover or bear arms is laid out in the American Constitution and so it would be difficult to legislate tighter regulations on gun control. I am afraid, in the aftermath of yet another shooting there will be a lot of stuff and nonsense and ultimately what will happen is probably very little with blame thrown either side of the divide.

Next month, America will spend millions of dollars on what is effectively the inauguration of Barack O'Bama. We will have forgotten about the shooting soon and that is the sad thing with any shooting. The initial fervour to do something will die out and it will then be the last major shooting when another one occurs. That is the society that is over the pond. Kill people but defend their right to carry the gun.

There is so much truth, for so many in the saying, 'They know all of their rights, but none of their responsibilities.'

Thoughts and prayers go, of course, to all those affected.
