I am now heartily sick of the whole ****ing thing, why can't we just have another election and the party with the most seats gets in ?

Better still take the three morons at the top now and perform a public execution with a warning to the others to stop ****ing about and get on with the job in hand.

          As I said last night.......

can't believe that not only might we get a Government led by a Prime Minister I didn't vote for, leading a party I didn't vote for, and most of the country didn't vote for, but then, we might get a change to........ a Government comprised of a party most of the country didn't vote for led by another Prime Minister who NONE of the country voted for...........
          Is no longer here

In Scotland, it took 2 weeks for form a coalition government so not sure the talks are necessarily important to be concluded quickly.
The problem the libdems will have if they go with Labour is that any election further would give the Conservatives the upper hand, ie a vote for the LibDems is a vote for Labour. I didn't vote for Gordon Brown or David Cameron but I may get either as Prime Minister, but that is the system I vote for. No one got 50% of the vote so none us will necessarily be happy.
I think Clegg is in a no win situation. Personally, Conservatives won the largest number of seats so I would hope he would deal with them or that the Conservatives look at the Scottish, welsh and Northern Ireland parties if that would create a majority. I didn't vote for them but they got the most seats, the highest number of votes and whether I like it or not, their leader deserves to be PM of this country.

Personally I was quite happy for DC and NC to be talking, it was clear open and above board- however if it is true that Clegg was then having secret meetings with Labour before the talks were completed then I have changed my mind. Why the secrecy? If he wanted to have talks with both then fine - but be honest about it. And for Brown to stand down now whilst all this is going on to me seems ridiculous. Negotiations are between parties not individuals so as much as I dont like GB he should have the guts to stay there and act on behalf of his party until we were out of this stage of uncertainty (IMO)

DC is right to say its make your mind up time and not make anymore offers - and as was said at the weekend - be careful because if you hug a chimney sweep you get sooty.

There was nothing really secret about it. The whole world was waiting for it to happen. What would you say if they did not have a discussion?- you would be quick to blame him for that as well. They were going through the motions so that Clegg can go back to his party and say he got the best deal.

Gordon Brown handled the situation perfectly and gave the opposition time to reach an agreement. When the time came for the transition of power, he resigned. There was no other option really.

I never said he should not have meetings.

I agree with you about Scotland but that also can be said about other areas of the country as well that feel abandoned and ignored. No party has all the answers and TBH there is probably very little confidence in all politicians at the moment.

                      Time will tell.

Ha, just found this again and thought it seemed to be reasonably appropriate taking into account the events of the last few days and tonight's outcome.

All the organs of the body were having a meeting, trying to decide who was the one in charge.

"I should be in charge," said the brain , "Because I run all the body's
systems, so without me nothing would happen."

"I should be in charge," said the blood , "Because I circulate oxygen all
over so without me you'd all waste away."

"I should be in charge," said the stomach," Because I process food and
                        give all of you energy."

"I should be in charge," said the legs, "because I carry the body
                        wherever it needs to go."

"I should be in charge," said the eyes, "Because I allow the body to see
                        where it goes."

"I should be in charge," said the rectum, "Because I'm responsible for
                        waste removal."

All the other body parts laughed at the rectum And insulted him, so in a
                        huff, he shut down tight.

Within a few days, the brain had a terrible headache, the stomach was
bloated, the legs got wobbly, the eyes got watery, and the blood Was
                        toxic.

They all decided that the rectum should be the boss

Consider the following statement made by Gordon Brown to the nation from the steps of Downing Street on live television on 10 May:

''I will continue as leader of the labour party until the labour party conference’’

Then consider this statement made by Gordon Brown to the nation from the steps of Downing Street on live television on 11 May:

''My resignation of the labour party will take place immediately’’

Now, using your skill and judgment, are these the words of a trustworthy man?

On May 10th it wasn't with absolute certainty that GB would not be Prime Minister until the Labour Party Conference.
On May 11th he was no longer Prime Minister which under most circumstances leads to the leader of that Party resigning.
To be honest, he looked relieved to be going and you gotta say this, whilst a lot of people are glad to see him go, so is he.

You are correct in what you quote of course, but remember context.

He still had a duty as Prime Minister to facilitate transfer of power to whoever was taking over and had an eye on the financial situation (his good eye)

He said the correct thing at the time he said it and he meant it.

He had to stay while things were resolved and resigned as leader probably as a condition of talks between Labour and Lib Dems.

Nick Clegg denied that there was any such condition since LibDems spoke privately with Labour and then formally with them.
We can do history all we like but let's be thankful that there are no NI hike next year, likelihood is that ID Cards scheme will be scrapped and we may see an emergency budget next month.

We can continue to argue or deal with it.
David Cameron is Prime Minister and rightly so due to the number of votes and seats that he achieved. Lib Dems as the 3rd party in the election are with them in a real government and the next election in May 2015 so realistically the thread is over. We have a new Prime Minister, we have different views on Gordon Brown and Labour but life goes on......
