  • Court Claims Illustration of figures for bank complaints

Apr 06 marked really the start of the major campaign on bank charges with the release of the Credit Card Default report from the OFT.

The OFT Test case was announced and the waiver put in place in July 2007.

These figures are ALL bank claims submitted to county courts/moneyclaim online each month - so not just charges.

    Figures from Ministry of Justice.

    _)________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ _ VALUE OF CLAIM

April 06 to April 08 there were 58595 claims entered in court

32395 of those were entered to court between April 07 to April 08.....for comparison FOS had 39263 complaints lodged with it regarding current accounts in the same period. Thats 71658 complaints on current accounts formally entered between April 07 and Apr 08, think we can comfortably quadruple that for the number in with the banks.

Hardship Claims entered from July 07 to March 08 - 97000. Resolved 24000. (More specific figures to follow soon)

Very interesting and excellent work Ame. It clearly shows how much of an effect the Test Case and the associated waiver had on the number of claims entered into the courts.

Will be interesting to see a similar graph when you get the figures back from the FSA for hardship.

Well done - I do like a graph.

I was just looking at my old FSA hardship figures and there's no real correlation to the Channel 4 figures but we will be able to make some comparisons with the ones you've asked for.

          These were those figures.

Feb 2008 from FSA (figures from July 07 to Feb 08)

customers making complaints identified by the banks as being cases of
          financial hardship - 6,908

financial hardship cases offered a full or partial refund of charges - 1,195
