Re: Petition for Free Nursery Places for Under 2's

Actually, I think its the ideal thread for a discussion on the subject. Some may agree more with helping mothers to stay at home for longer, and some may agree with more help to get mothers back into work as soon as possible - but I think either side of the argument would support better, and cheaper, provision for childcare for the under two's for those in need of it.

The continued discussion on the subject matter keeps this thread boosted to gain a wider audience to potential signatories, where as closing it and letting it drop of the radar wouldnt have done that.

Also - I don't believe any one has talked about whether it is right or wrong to stay at home or go out to work - peoples opinions on childcare of different sorts and the provision, or lack of, does highlight further what the need is and an indication of the support of this petition.

Fine in theory if people remember that the link is in the first post. Otherwise they will forget about it and get caught up in the debate. How many times do you start reading a thread from the very begining? Usually its a case of catching it after its in full swing therefore depending on tangents and other factors the initial point becomes blured.

Fully aware of locking thread Steph, however as amethyst pointed out it would drop of the radar by doing that.

Re: Petition for Free Nursery Places for Under 2's

The thread title is clear enough that the thread was started as a means of letting people know about a petition ... if readers are daft enough not to be able to find the link, they shouldn't be signing petitions anyway.

I don't agree with you Tanz; the obvious place to discuss a petition is a thread asking people to sign a petition! Why shouldn't people have the benefit of reading through a discussion of the pros/cons of the petition's proposal, before rushing off to sign it?

To be honest, all of these Number 10 petitions are a complete waste of time in any case. Name me one thing where the government has changed policy as a result of them. Even when there are millions of signatories for something where public opinion is clear-cut, Tony (and now Gordon) simply ignore it.

In your response to mine, where you say:
You seem to be forgetting that some families won't have a choice to do anything else but return to work.
you seem to be missing several of my points. For those very people who "have no choice but to return to work", salaries are depressed and the costs of childcare inflated, precisely because of government subsidisation of childcare costs. I simply don't accept that the subsidisation achieves its desired objective.

Re: Petition for Free Nursery Places for Under 2's

Personally I think that people (usually young women) who work in these nurseries work hard enough for such little pay and if the government was to start allowing free care then it would only push their wages down. my sister is one and believe me the owners of these places are not the kind hearted child-lovers they claim to be. They already exploit their staff into working longer hours for a pittance and use their geniune affection for the children against them. So I won't sign on the basis that it will only make the nursey nurses worse off in the long run.

Re: Petition for Free Nursery Places for Under 2's

I think the petition is perfectly acceptable and I also agree it should be alongside a petition to help those who wish to stay at home to look after young chldren as well .

Choice is the key and putting the child first.

I think if you had a vote the majority of women or men for that matter would prefer to stay at home with the children in the early years or if possible use family to help.

I disagree on the basis that if the gov subsidised the cost of the childcare places then what difference would it make. The Nursery owners would still get their dosh. So on that basis your arguement is flawed.

Its not likely that the Gov would subsidise this anyway to be honest. I just get riled when they say one thing but don't think about the practicalities. Typical Gov policy you might say. :-)
