    Re: NHS cuts

I miss this forum - Nattie you changed your name again?

I had recent experience of NHS having to go to emergency section of the eye hospital. But I had a fixed time appointment . I was seen within 5 mins by nurses for assesment - great I thought - then moved to another room - full of patients - There I waited for nearly three hours before I was seen ( and I was feeling quite ill during this time) Also there was a very elderly lady in a wheel chair who was getting quite distressed. But as we were all typically english and dont cause a fuss - and I appreciate that as far as I know none of this was life threatening we all just sat and waited our turn . However not once did one of the nurses ( who were obviously ahead in their area of assesment ) come and just explain why the appointments were so late or how long we would have to wait - and we would have felt a bit better if someone had just said sorry.

Also I have just had a discussion with a friend of mine who is very involved in front line volunteer services for disabled children and adults and there are huge cuts going on in Oxfordshire as money that should have been ring fenced by the council is being diverted to other areas ( not entirely the Governments fault)

However I am getting a bit annoyed about peoples short memory about why we are in this state and dont think this Gov should get all the blame - although I still think there are other areas that could possibly be cut first before the NHS and social services. IMO of course.

Of course they are charging the NHS, whether they've been paid at the start of the contract or not. Do you seriously believe that they charge you or any other person employed by your company, out at the same rate that they are paying you? Of course they don't, that's what Sapph was saying. If they did, how would they be making a profit on their business activities.

No company would put in a tender, be it for 1, 2, 5, 10 years or whatever, unless they were going to make money on it.

And they probably haven't been paid at the start of th contract. It would depend on the terms of the tender, might be paid yearly in advance, monthly in arrears, quarterly in arrears, who knows?

To be brutally honest, no-one in their right mind would pay everything all upfront at the start of a contract, and if the NHS have done, then the manager who authorised such a stupid move should be moved from their job immediately. If they've paid upfront, then no doubt that is a major contributory factor to the parlous state of the NHS, but as I said, I doubt very much if they would have paid upfront at the start.

On the other hand, I found a lump 10 days ago, I have since been in, had tests and biopsies and am going back next Thursday for the results, I was treated wonderfully and in fact have just received a big bunch of daffodils from one of the staff, ok she's also my neighbour and a friend, I am more than happy by the way I've been treated in that hospital, I've been there many times and have always had a good experience in there, perhaps I am visiting the right departments.

I think that's the key phrase, Sapph, visiting the right departments. I too found a lump a couple of months ago. I was referred to the local Breast Unit within 2 weeks, when I got there I went from Consultant to mammogram to scan and back to consultant again, all within a couple of hours in the same building. Point is,there is more money being pumped into certain departments than others. I just happened to be in need of a department which is being well funded.

My husband's wait for treatment etc for his fragmented spine etc is a whole different story though, very recently we had to go private to speed up the chances of him getting treatment as quickly as possible, paid privately for XRays and privately to see the consultant, once he'd seen the consultant he then got back into NHS for treatment. whereas can take up to 18 weeks on NHS just to see the consultant. All in all it cost over £400, which may not seem a lot but we had to borrow it. Otherwise he would still be in agony on the living room floor unable to move, unable to work, and not getting any wages.
