Today the Government launched a consultation on mortgage regulation, which sets out proposals to:
The Government seeks stakeholder views on these proposals by the 15 February 2010.
The Government is committed to ensuring mortgage markets in the UK are fair, stable and efficient. The consultation follows the announcements on mortgage regulation made in 8 July Reforming financial markets consultation, which set out the Government's proposals for reform of the financial system.
The proposals set out today, aim to strengthen the protection enjoyed by UK families with mortgages.

- extend the scope of FSA regulation to include second-charge mortgages;
- extend the scope of FSA regulation to include buy-to-let mortgages; and
- protect borrowers when lenders sell on mortgage books to third parties.
