Over the last few months Abbey customers have been receiving Transaction Summary Statements which seem to have led people to believe their accounts had been closed with a credit balance.
The statement is called a Transaction Summary Statement and shows an opening balance and a net balance. These are annual statement which are required to be sent out to customers.
These amounts are usually the same and appear to be a credit balance.
These statements actually show a debt to the bank, which the bank have classed as a bad debt and passed on to debt collectors, most often Capquest/H L Legal, who are sending out letters to customers to attempt recovery of these debts. Alternatively the statements could show a debt which has been paid off within the last year via a debt collection agency.
Some of these debts are over 6 years old and as such statute barred. Others are more recent. For example - CapQuest collecting a debt over 15 years old - Legal Beagles
If you receive one of these statements then you should have a dig about your paperwork and find out if you have an outstanding debt owing to Abbey.
In many cases these debts are overdrafts which have stopped being repaid because they are outweighed by bank charges claims.
If you do have a debt you need not take any action as you probably will receive contact from a Debt Collection Agency in due course.
There is a contact number on the statements which offers a recorded message: 0114 2704819 . 01142704819
which says ......
We have recently sent a statement to you confirming transactions on your account. Please notice you will still receive statements on a regular basis..... if your account has been assigned or transferred to another company that company will be intouch with you if this has not already happened - thank you for calling.
