  • Seasons Greetings from Legal Beagles 2008

    Merry Christmas Beagles !!!!!!

It's been a busy year one way or another across the forum....the country's in a bit of a financial crisis and consumers aren't willing to sit by and watch their hard earned being swallowed up for no apparent reason anymore. Christmas is coming and the geese are a bit skinny.

Beagles has gone from strength to strength, thanks to some marvellous support and great people on board.

We have had a private meeting with the OFT and entered a full response to the OFT consultation on the future of the personal current account market. We hope this will bring forward some of the issues which affect our members on a daily basis. You can read it here

We have followed the test case between the OFT and the banks regarding overdraft fees very closely and had members attend nigh on every hearing and report on site, often bringing us the little details the press don't report on.

Our work with hardship cases is going well and we have had numerous successes reclaiming unfair overdraft fees for the most vulnerable members. We're lobbying the FSA to further tighten the reins on the banks with regard to the treatment of customers in financial difficulties.

The end to the test case seems a long way off but already we are seeing changes in the way banks deal with unauthorised overdraft charges ; whether these changes will be for the benefit of consumers remains to be seen and we are supporting tighter regulation and standardisation in this area.

The OFT v Banks Test Case will leave many issues unresolved for consumers. Tom Brennan from Atlas Chambers is proposing a group litigation in order to resolve these issues without the need for all claimants to go through court individually. Please visit the forum and check your eligibility to take part, and answer the poll so we can gauge how much support there would be for litigation on this scale.

Reclaiming fees incurred on credit cards is still going strong and we have recently had a member obtain a county court judgment agreeing that compound interest principles apply to this type of claim. The case is in the final stages now in deciding the exact rate to be awarded and we are hopeful this will pave the way for many more consumers being compensated properly for the unfair charging they have endured over many years.

We're all watching the purse strings a little more in this run up to Christmas and we have a busy thread dedicated to tips and advice for having a marvellous festive season without spending the next year paying for it. We've also started the Beagles £2 coin savers club ready for next Christmas, with lots of encouragement and support along the way.

With the 'Credit Crunch' comes doom and gloom and even if people really don't understand the nitty gritty of this, we may all be affected by it in some way. Some of us will just have a little bit less money at the end of the week and have a good old moan about it (as we do). For others it will be devastating and life changing.

Please remember that there is help out there for you if you are getting into financial difficulty, we know it's easy to bury your head in the sand and most of us have been there - the trouble is, the rest of you is still above ground and your bum will get bitten eventually. So please take this on board and seek help BEFORE you feel you are getting to the stage you can no longer cope with it. A recent survey suggested people wait until their outgoings exceed their incomings by more than a third before seeking help. You are not alone by a long way and we will try to help you gain the confidence to take control of the situation before it gets worse.

If things are getting on top of you we have a private support area for more personal issues, somewhere you can let off a bit of steam without being judged and have some support from people who are going through similar things. Just contact Sapphire if you would like to join us.

We are delighted to see so many members, old and new, getting stuck in, helping and supporting other people. There are a few people who have been the backbone of the site since we started over 18 months ago who deserve a special thank you, but will save their blushes for now. They know who they are.

If you haven't visited for a while, why not pop back in and see what's going on. Our VIP area is thriving and our chatbox is always a hive of activity. It's a great community to be a part of and we are very proud of all our members.

Wishing you a very Happy Christmas and a prosperous and peaceful New Year.
