When 16-year-old Bella saw that an outfit she liked was on offer for £22, she wanted to snap it up. She has a PayPal account and used it to pay for the item through the website. But in her excitement over the purchase, she didn’t really notice she had signed up for what looks to... Read more »

I thought that a 16yr old couldn't legally sign a contract (and it be enforced) anyway :noidea:

      You are correct Kati!
Unfortunately unscrupulous companies will take any order put to the fact that many 16 year old have debit cards which of course don't identify the age of the user.
Under 18's can have some credit but it is limited to use for buying " essentials" the law/regulation needs overhaul to catch up with the 21st Century.

Some sites have a raft of small print that goes unread then problems arise very quickly.

        From CAB
        Debt

As a child or young person, you cannot normally be taken to court for debt. This is because you cannot be legally held to a contract you make when you are under 18. However, there are some exceptions to this rule. You can be held legally responsible for any debts you run up to buy things that you need like food, shelter or clothing.

There may be other debts you can be held legally responsible for. If in doubt, consult an experienced adviser, for example, at a Citizens Advice Bureau. To search for details of your nearest CAB, including those that can give advice by e-mail, click on nearest CAB.

As a parent you are not usually under any obligation to pay the debts of your child. However, if you acted as a guarantor for a contract they entered into, you will be responsible for any debts under the agreement.

On a similar subject my friend fell for the 'fantastic face cream offer' 3 times now they have taken £70 odd plus from her account and 3 times her bank have told her not to cancel her card just inform the fraud team if they take any more it will be returned. They said it's happening all the time they know all about it. I think this is disgusting tbh, I can understand they will need to trace these companies and they do change names etc but just to write off what could potentially be millions is not on.
