He was a a fabulous actor and what a sad loss. Despite often playing in comedy roles he suffered from depression ........

The death of Robin Williams has lead to a discussion about whether or not suicide is a selfish act(that might be for a different discussion), but he starred in many fantastic films such as Dead Poets Society(carpe Diem, O Captain my Captain), Good Morning, Vietnam(O my god it's early!), Good Will Hunting(he won the Oscar for best supporting actor), Jumanji, and Mrs Doubtfire.

Comedic genius and like many fantastic actors he was a troubled man who ultimately took his own life. Sad day for all of us who remember his fantastic comedy but also a man who is now at peace with himself.

A comic genius in my opinion. Robin williams was diagnosed with bipolar and in 1996 admitted he was an alcoholic ... I can remember him voicing the genie in Disneys Aladdin - he only did that on the condition he was paid the same as the other actors and that he wasn't NAMED in any of the advertising either (in fact he went on to insist that the genie would take up no more than 20% of the advertising space too)! RIP Mr Williams

I do believe in the 'fine line between genius and madness' and am no way suggesting mental illness is madness although it was considered so not so very long ago. I do think genes have a very big part in how we progress through life by way of how they are permeated through our families.
As Robin I think said in an interview depression is not brought on, it is always there underlying ready to surface, so how can this be if it is not always in our makeup.
Very sad for all concerned except for Robin himself who through genius or madness decided he'd had enough and ended it for whichever reason.

As Stephen Fry said, 'Depression isn’t a straightforward response to a bad situation; depression just is, like the weather.'

He also wrote this which I find very touching, "And then I saw depression and nothing was ever the same again.
The sky was never the same colour, the moon never the same shape: the air never smelt the same, food never tasted the same. Every word I knew changed its meaning, everything that once was stable and firm became as insubstantial as a puff of wind."

With regards to suicide I 'like' this analogy:

The so-called ‘psychotically depressed’ person who tries to kill herself doesn’t do so out of quote ‘hopelessness’ or any abstract conviction that life’s assets and debits do not square. And surely not because death seems suddenly appealing.

The person in whom Its invisible agony reaches a certain unendurable level will kill herself the same way a trapped person will eventually jump from the window of a burning high-rise. Make no mistake about people who leap from burning windows. Their terror of falling from a great height is still just as great as it would be for you or me standing speculatively at the same window just checking out the view; i.e. the fear of falling remains a constant. The variable here is the other terror, the fire’s flames: when the flames get close enough, falling to death becomes the slightly less terrible of two terrors.

It’s not desiring the fall; it’s terror of the flames. And yet nobody down on the sidewalk, looking up and yelling ‘Don’t!’ and ‘Hang on!’, can understand the jump. Not really. You’d have to have personally been trapped and felt flames to really understand a terror way beyond falling.

I don't necessarily agree with the analogy because I don't think "fear" is something that would play into the minds of a person killing themselves. I would suggest that those who take their own lives lose the fear of death that many of us have that keeps us alive, ie the idea of killing ourselves might be prevalent in one's mind but actually doing it is something different. A person may well kill themselves because the mental pain that they are going would be relieved by the taking of their own life. They would see it as something that would unburden their friends/ family/ loved ones and would lose that fear of death.

I think the motivation must vary from person to person. I know the inner circumstances under which I (for example) have (more than) considered it, why it has on particular occasion(s) seemed the only way - and they don't really tie in with any of the above.

It's terribly sad for those left behind that RW succeeded but he was clearly determined and now he is free. I hope and pray that his soul does rest in eternal peace.

Unless you have lost a close one to suicide ie watched them commit, attempted oneself or been so close as to taste is breath on your neck You will never ever know the real meaning of fear ... THAT is a fact

Totally Agree with Miss FM. This varies from person to person. There is no doubt that clinical depression is often cited at inquests however many, many suicides occur when what are considered very rational people are unable to cope with extreme situations and I am must say fear is also a common factor. Many people will have to face situations that are more terrifying than death. As miss FM said, our perception of those crisis will differ because of our support network and other specific unique options. This does not mean that some of us are weaker than others. It is not cowardly, it is not an insane action, and it is a tragedy. It is true that many of us will be faced with a situation that due to our individual circumstance we simply cannot cope with.
