Staff at a financial services company in Leeds that stopped offering payday loans market last month are now facing redundancy. The Cheque Centre, which has shops in the Merrion Centre, Bramley, Crossgates and Morley as well as Wakefield, Castleford and Dewsbury, has announced that a number of outlets will be axed as part of a […]

I would have sympathy with the staff if I didn't know the business model of these places. Sadly anyone with ethics would either not work there in the first place, or fail to make a living as they would not pressurise people via the hard sell to do things there and then in full and certain knowledge they was a high probability they were wrecking the peoples' lives for their own financial gain.

Just had a message. Sorry for all the staff who are losing their jobs.

I have just read your article about possible store closures, as an employee of the company, I can confirm that the decision has already been made about which and how many stores will be closing. The majority of stores will be shut down, they entered a 45 day 'consultation period' a few days a go and staff have been given a 4 week notice period from the end of these 45 days. Staff who have yet to complete the 3 month probation period have been given an instant 1 weeks notice from thursday just passed. There is no consultation from staff, the decisions have already been made.

Sadly people don't have much of a choice. If you were on jobseekers looking for work if the job centre sent you for an interview and you turned down a job you'd end up being sanctioned and anything is better than nothing sometimes. Some staff tried to behave properly but suffered threats of job loss and bullying from management. Not a nice enivornment to work in from the accounts I've heard from staff.

I appreciate those points, but still, stick by my principles on this.

I queried a (soon to be) ex staff member elsewhere and got a string of abuse saying amongst things that "the lowlifes they had as customers didn't deserve to be treated better".

And I'm normally very tolerant. Too tolerent sometimes...

I don't doubt some of the staff have that attitude, and no there is no sympathy from this side for those people either, just not tarring all the staff with the same brush.

I feel sorry for all those losing their jobs, I am sure 90% of the staff hate the job and would much rather be in a permanant placing with a guaranteed wage each month. Sadly these jobs are typical of what the clone clowns are stating in their figures as bringing unemployment down. As we slowly but surely get these cretins out of the market place more than ever will be unemployed. As the so called economy bucks up the so will the interest rates and gawd help a lot of them jobless then.

A question that shows my ignorance I'm afraid.

If a place is paying commission only for a job with no basic wage, can people still be forced to take it and have their benefit stopped?

I know employers have to abide by minimum wage requirements, but also that contracts can be 'part time' with a supposedly agreed 'output'. This is clearly open to abuse and could surely easily create the situation where the contractual hours are insufficient to live on unless a certain number of sales are made. In a tough economic climate or very competitive marketplace, these contracts would be highly desirable from an employers point of view.

Could someone be forced to accept such a contract?

Interestingly we have less disposable income than our stepson who is on JSA each week so I have a fair idea of the financial difficulties and pressures.
