    Council tax liability orders challenge

A vicar who has refused to pay his council tax in protest to changes to welfare has promised to keep fighting in the New Year. The Reverend Paul Nicolson, of Campbell Road, Tottenham, has challenged Haringey Magistrates Court over its decision to approve thousands of liability orders against people who cannot pay their council tax. He has asked the court to explain explaining how it can justify charging £125 court costs against people who are already in debt – therefore making the problem worse. The liability orders allow Haringey Borough Council to take measures to collect the council tax. Rev Nicolson said: “The court has refused to answer my questions and have called my application futile and academic. “I am incandescent about the merciless and careless way the magistrates and council enforce the council tax.” The 80-year-old is has now asked the High Court to order the Haringey Magistrates to explain their legal errors.
Will the High Court take this on?

This was asked by confuciused in chat, so have posted it here.

Maybe, but then again it may just enlighten folks and they may then seek help and find sites like this where they can be helped. As indeed every little helps, as the old lady said when she peed in the sea.

A vicar emerged triumphant from the High Court after winning permission to seek judicial review into a council’s increase of legal costs.
