British policing works because the police are an organisation directly accountable to the people it serves, while each individual constable remains independent under the law and personally answerable for his or her actions in the courts.

If we were to lose the community-based and locally accountable policing that we enjoy then - and who is to say that this is not coming anyway as this is the intention of the EU as has been very clear for a long time - we would have to adopt the system in place in continental Europe.

On the Napoleonic model, the police over there have always been a paramilitary body controlled by central government, and indeed when dictatorships have taken over, as they often have, the police forces of the continent have invariably been their willing tools.

      Is that what you want?
Ok, maybe I was a bit blunt in my original post, but the fact is that a highly experienced officer will now be sat on his behind at home.
His morale will drop as he will be facing all the questioning, while he is unable to do any work
This officer could still be working, without being armed, and therefore serving the public.
These enquiries can go on for months, and I agree they need to be done, but while this is happening the officer will be getting fed up with this.
This then in turn will affect the officers judgement in future cases, as at the back of his mind will be the enquiry if he shoots again balanced against what could happen if he doesn't.

Basically I dont think they are suported enough after the event.

you have a point of course, however, since this event will be traumatic to the copper i bet, and he/she will know how the system works, I suspect that being suspended is not unexpected and may serve another purpose as well.

i have never shot anyone, but i have been involved in the death of a person in the line of duty and have some empathy for the copper involved.

Personally I needed a break and I suspect he/she does.

whether they need to be suspended indefinitely pending the enquiry is of course a reasonable question.
