Robber Shot Dead In Bank Raid

    Updated: 12:03, Thursday September 13, 2007
One robber has been shot dead and another injured in an attempted armed robbery at a Hampshire bank, according to Sky News sources.
The incident reportedly happened as the pair attempted to rob a security van outside an HSBC branch in Chandlers Ford, Hampshire.

A force spokesman was unable to confirm that anyone had been shot but said Hampshire Police had been involved in a joint operation with the Metropolitan Police Flying Squad at the bank.

The Flying Squad specialises in tackling armed robbers and often lies in wait for gangs as a result of tip offs.

An onlooker said she heard a loud bang and then shouts of "get down".

Lynn Ward, who works at the Alexander Keen estate agent next door to the HSBC bank, said: "I heard a loud bang ring out and initially thought it must be a traffic accident.

"But when I looked out of the window I saw a security van and two people on the floor with armed police stood over them. It was chaos and there was lots of shouting and screaming.

A spokesman for HSBC said: "We can confirm that no customers or staff have been hurt in this incident.

"We are obviously very grateful because this violent incident appears to have had the potential to have been much worse."

The incident is believed to have taken place outside the branch in Bournemouth Road, Chandlers Ford.

Thank God for that, I thought someone who matters had been killed.

Flaming Police have got a lot to answer for, appears they only wounded the second one.

That marksman needs dragging back to the firing range methinks, shouldn't have missed.

One can only assume that this is someone's way of getting a stay lifted!

You should be thankful that the police "marksman" hit anything at all - most so-called firearms trained [sic] officers could not hit a cow's arse with a banjo.

But why does the IPCC have to get involved? I really don't understand all this, we ask a job of the police and then we question them for doing it.

The IPCC Get involved to check that nothing else could be done but to shoot the criminals, they ensure that everything possible had been done before shooting them.

Wrong IMO, but that's the way it goes.

Well if they are sure hanging, drawing and quartering is not an option, then I think it's fine to shoot them.

As soon as a Police marksman shoots someone, they are taken off duty and suspended with pay, pending the enquiry.

Great system we have isnt it

It's not fair, the police have enough to deal with, without getting suspended for what they are paid and trained to do.

It is the only system that can be trusted and long may this continue!

British policing works because the police are an organisation directly accountable to the people it serves, while each individual constable remains independent under the law and personally answerable for his or her actions in the courts.

If we were to lose the community-based and locally accountable policing that we enjoy then - and who is to say that this is not coming anyway as this is the intention of the EU as has been very clear for a long time - we would have to adopt the system in place in continental Europe.

On the Napoleonic model, the police over there have always been a paramilitary body controlled by central government, and indeed when dictatorships have taken over, as they often have, the police forces of the continent have invariably been their willing tools.

                          Is that what you want?

                              Ask Jean Charles DeMendez?

Not sure how to spell the guys name, you may recall, he was a Brazilian electrician until he was shot dead by the police for being dark skinned and of middle eastern appearance!
