just asking for views on this subject

we all realise you do not post negative comments on face book on anything to do with work.

what would you say if two people who had friends status on their facebook page and have the security settings set to private

one posters calls the boss a prat, the second "friend" then prints off the profile page and gives it the boss.

facebook are covered as it was not them who released the info to the boss, but what about data protection and confirdentiality in the second person releasing the details without the first persons permission

this sinario will not make any difference on a disciplinary action, but what on a data protection issue on the unauthorised release of this data to a third party

remember, the security settings are set to private

I'd dump the 'friend'...although I would hope most people are too sensible to commit anything to written word. There must be some recourse to the DPA,,but I wouldn't know where to start.

I was always under the impression personal opinion couldnt result in disciplinary.

Personally, I would advice your member to block the ex friend, I can talk you through it if they dont know how to, and say it was a personal opinion voiced away from work.

I've got no idea re the DPA issue, sorry about that.

But speaking as the friend, I'd kick the other one from here to eternity.

Speaking as a Boss (yes I have my own business) I'd sack the grass and promote the one who said it, at least they are not scared of voicing their opinion, but I'd say to them in future if you have something to say call me a pratt to my face not on facebook.

yep i agree, posting anything negative about your employment on a social networking site is classed as missconduct

its the data protection issue ime interested in

its releasing data to a third party without consent when the security settings are set to private

ime looking to put this brown noser well and truly in the brown stuff over this

My train of thought would be keep friends close and enemies closer,so I'd do a Sapphy,,sack the grass, promote the other one,,and make sure he/she knew I was watching

Have had a read on FB itself.

according to them, you chose the people you allow to see your posts, so a private profile would be people the OP's union member would have allowed to see it.

If someone then shares your status (ie screenshots) there is little you can do as you allowed them to veiw the post.

All they say is report and block the user in question, and that no DPA breach is in effect as your member allowed his ex friend to view the data.

Re: facebook and negative employer posts

its not allowing the user to view the members data thats the problem

its releasing that data then to a third party without authorisation from the data subject as the security settings are set to pivate in facebook

i realise i am clutching at straws a bit but i am going to put the wind up this brown noser

when he went into work this morning it was as though he "was sent to coventry" and rightly so

if you cant trust a work collegue, even managers support now, who can you trust, no one likes a grass to the detrament of a work collegue

Can you imagine me being able to 'send someone to Coventry'....I would last all of 30 seconds before I had them pinned up against a wall with my hand gently cutting off their airsupply

Me too but I'd be kicking them in the crutch and sticking my 'perfectly manicured' fingernails in their eyes at the same time

I remember back in the day (many moons ago when the three day week was on) and I worked for a big company, we had a Union Rep that was always threatening this, that and the other, the bosses promoted him to management, that stopped his tricks lol.

Re: facebook and negative employer posts

Unfortunately I have been there and have been spoken to by a previous employer and this was after the banking career. I posted more or less that part of a supervisor's roll was to spout BS. To be honest, I was just letting off steam at the time but someone(who I am 100% certain that I know the source for) printed it out and passed it onto a boss at work. I deleted the post anyway and other stuff I had posted on there that was negative but which came from the internet meant that the only part which was of issue was the BS part because the rest was fair comment and were not in anyway punishable. To be honest, it was one of those days but it does mean that I never post about work on FB. It's easier to put on FB that you've had a bad day at work then to say that you hate your boss and would happily dance on their grave

Having a HUGE family,,facebook can be a blessing and a curse,,specially if there is a 'bit of gossip' (which there nearly always is!!) But they all know to let Aunty Nikki know everything before it hits the keyboard,,cos my wrath is not worth incurring And they all know,,if it didn't come from me,via my gob,it isn't true..(I've been dead about 6 times according to the family jungle drums)
