        Re: BT's dangerous suggestion.

I know this is old forum now but there is a lot of argument about taking the faceplate off the master socket. That is only possible when the faceplate on the new (?) style master, with an obvious horizontal line across the middle front. The whole idea of this is that any extensions in the house should be wired to this faceplate. Remove the faceplate and you remove the extensions from the line. You are now using the line and the test socket which is BT's responsibility. If any problem is still there just using the test socket then it is up to BT to sort it out, for free. If a problem disappears with the faceplate removed then the problem is in the house wiring and BT will charge for any visit. There should not be any live contacts in there.

Internal wiring does make a difference. My broadband is normally about 5Mb/s, adequate for me but not fast. Remove the internal wiring from the equation and I get about 8.5 Mb/s. Need to persuade SWMBO that a modem/router next to the master in the living room is acceptable.

Some of the early BT modem/routers were abysmal. Had one a couple of weeks ago that kept dropping the wireless connection to a new tablet (connection to computer is wired). Even after firmware update the performance didn't improve a lot.

Bill-K will have trouble if he has problems. TalkTalk usually get BT to do the line work for them. Which is why it takes ages for TalkTalk to accept a line fault as they are reluctant to incur a charge from BT.
