  • Bt include 0870 and 0845 in call time packages

    http://www.btplc.com/news/articles/showarticle.cfm?articleid={e501c5ef-11a2-4779-a932-177450ecd870}

In a move costing BT tens of millions, the company has decided to give customers what they want by including 0870 and 0845 numbers in call packages.*

An Anytime customer will now get their calls to these numbers for free – as well as all their calls to UK landlines and great rates on mobile calls – for just £4.85 a month, which works out at less than the cost of a second class stamp a day.

A customer who is on the Evening and Weekend package will get their 0870 and 0845 calls for free, as well as their UK landline calls, after 6pm every day and all weekend.

No UK phone company has ever included these call types in their packages before, because 0845 and 0870 numbers generate large revenues for the banks, utility firms and other organisations that use them.

However, customers resented the high charges for 0870 and 0845 numbers, especially as the organisations using them were seen to be making a profit from them. Campaigners even set up a web site to let customers know other numbers to call the same companies, called saynoto0870.

The Government recently announced a review of doctors and NHS departments using 084 numbers, because customers complained they should not be charged more to call for medical help.

The table below shows how much you can save on a 10-minute call made on a Saturday morning:

Prices correct at time of going to print. Comparison based on pence-per-minute rates and set-up fees charged after 8am at the weekend (correct December 2008). Competitor monthly line rental costs from £11 (Virgin Media), £10.50 (TalkTalk), £10.99 (Tiscali), £10 (Sky) and £10.72 (Post Office). Content of packages vary and prices quoted exclude calling circle discounts, where applicable.

BT Line rental £10.27 a month - Unlimited calls to UK landlines all weekend (so free 0845 and 0870 at weekend)

Free Evening and Weekend is rental of £10.27 a month - on `12 month tied basis

Unlimited landline calls at any time, plus call rates to mobiles for only 7.34p/min† is £4.34 + £10.37 a month.

Hmm, my company has an 0845 number. It means the caller gets charged local rate no matter where they are, we pay for that..
Might have to look at some alternative if people perceive it as a preium rate number. I thought all 0845 operated like this & only the 0870/0871 numbers were premium rate..

That's not the point. I get charged at local rate for dialling an 0845 number even though I've paid my phone provider for all calls to be free. I resent paying for all calls to be free when now, a lot of the numbers I dial are charged - whether at local rate or not. Because companies want to make money from incoming phone calls, they have mostly stopped publishing land line numbers.

SAYNOTO0870.COM - Non-Geographical Alternative Telephone Numbers helps you try to find a land-line number for all companies who have chargeable 08x numbers. Also useful for mobile users who want to call 0800 numbers and are happy to use their inclusive minutes which don't work on 08x numbers.

From my mobile phone, calling my work or 0800 jnumbers just get deducted from my included minutes. Not sure about land lines, I'd better check that out. Our 0845 number just gets re-routed to our 020 number.
I guess I'd better look into what happens with landlines calling us. The whole point of us getting the 0845 number was for customers to be able to call us at the lowest rate possible no matter where they are.

Which was great at the time when they brought out 0845 numbers, but nowadays nearly every telephone package includes free minutes and 'non-geographic' numbers such as these are always excluded from them.

On most mobile packages they actually charge you for 0800 numbers as well

Time to go back to a standard number then maybe. Ironic because we actually pay for this number and the cost of the calls.
