    Re: wireless extenders

It IS a faf trying to access the config. But usually doing as Cetelo says lets you in. It's a nuisance. Mind you, resetting it means you have to reregister your hub phone. Bloomin BT ain't exactly user friendly.

      Re: wireless extenders

I've had a play, and FINALLY got the voyager to act as a repeater. But it is a VERY fiddly process and not for the likes of me who gets annoyed easily. Voyager and hub both nearly out and over the cliff, swiftly followed by my laptop.

      BUT... here's where I found inspiration. http://www.jarviser.co.uk/jarviser/repeaterhubs.html

Okay I have done the reset and actually managed to get into the configuration at last.

I had to enter the serial number of the hub then set a password all done, but still no joy with the signal, also last night my wireless card antenna broke so not working any more.

Set up son NO 2's computer in his bedroom and he presto he gets signal up there, so there is surely just a) too much interference with my one or b) too much distance.

Okay enough is enough, can't stand not getting on the internet at night ( I know I am sad and need to get a life) I am going to try the repeater thing with the other hub, I have printed out all the instructions so wish me luck

If I don't get back it will be because I have mucked it all up or the computer and all equipment will be in the bin lol

If you don't mind spending a bit of money on this, you could cure it at a stroke with something like the Netgear 54Mbps Wall-Plugged Wireless Range Extender Kit. They cost around £60-£70 and could solve all your problems.

I am sure there are other manufacturers who will also provide something similar if you look.

                    Re: wireless extenders

I moved my computer today just down a few feet still very low signal but the speed has gone up from 1-2Mbps to 18-24Mbps so can actually load a page no bother now.

Haven't got any spare money at the moment to buy any more equipment so this will have to do.

Linksys Wireless-G USB Network Adapter with RangeB - Misco.co.uk

I have used Misco many times, their customer service is excellent so if it does not work, send it back for a full refund.

                          Re: wireless extenders

I've used wireless in my house for years and have always been disappointed by the results. I have a relatively new house and the walls etc are no that thick. But still I found that there woulod be blind spots in the house and some place where it was just downright unreliable. My younger daughter's PC (with wireless card) was in the room directly above the wireless router and yet sometimes could not get a signal. Even when it did get a signal, it was poor and thus affected performance.

Yet my other daughter (in the back of the house) would get a good signal everytime.

I know what I am doing with these things but I still couldn't get a satisfactory perfromance, even with a number of repeaters around the house (BTW, a repeater oinly amplifies the signal and thus amplifies the background noise too - creating problems in it self).

Eventually I gave up and just about 18 months ago I invested in a Devolo Homeplug Adapter kit. It effectively uses your house electiricty cables to create a network, giving a speed of up to 200 mbps. The beauty is that you can plug one in anywhere you have a power socket. You'll need one plugeed in near your home hub with network cable running from it to the hub. Then a further homeplug by your computer (wherever it may be) and another network calbe connecting it to your PC or laptop. As I said, if you move location, you can just take the plug with you.

Network performance improved dramatically and I never have to worry about signals again. I eventually bought four of them for around the house to different PC's. Much less hassle than wireless and impressive throughput too (it's fast).

Not a cheap option though. Start kits are around £50-£60 with extra plugs about another £30. PC World sell them, but you will prolly find them cheaper elsewhere online. They are an absolute dawdle to set up. Just plug it in and use it. As simple as that !!

Thanks Jester for that info money is a bit of a problem at the moment maybe when the house sells (if it ever does) I could invest in the plug option.
