  • VT of car with wrong mileage

    Dear all,

After reading the forum for the last 2 days I was unable to find someone with the same issue. I have paid a bit more than half of my finance with Santander and I want to start the VT process as I don't need the car anymore. The car is in almost excellent condition however there is a problem. When I have decided to sell it about a month ago I have discovered the car has been registered with the wrong mileage on the last 2 MOT's. There is a discrepancy of about 30k miles between the cars miles and what's been registered in the MOT certificate due to travelling throughout Europe quite often. Basically I have changed the instrument cluster of the car in kilometres and forgot to change back to miles. I'm currently waiting for DVSA to rectify the problem but due to backlog they said it may take up to 8 weeks to get back to me. I'm currently in my 6th week and still waiting.

Would the fact that the car has the wrong amount of miles on the MOT certificate weigh hard on their decision as in can they refuse to accept the VT and take the car back?

    Many thanks

They can't refuse to take the car back BUT they may charge for the apparent excess mileage. What they make of a KPH calibrated odometer I don't' know.

I don't think what's recorded in the MOT will be an issue if the Car says the mileage in miles and km and you can switch between them to show the person collecting/inspecting the car (if it's brought up at all of course) why the MOT details have a higher mileage listed, and explain that you are getting it rectified by the DVSA in the records. Of course it would be less hassle to get it sorted first but I don't think it would actually come up. Shouldn't the MOT guys have noticed it was displayed in km instead of m or does it not have any indication of that on the dash?

With the mileage in miles, are you under the mileage limit on your agreement for the period ?

I'm actually asking because no one wanted to buy the car with the discrepancy even after explaining them and showing the actual miles in the instrument cluster of the car. I have taken 2 buyers to the MOT garage, which is local, to get a confirmation from the mechanics which have admitted it was their mistake not checking properly at the time but still no one wanted to buy. This is the reason I'm asking thinking it may be hard for them to sell it afterwards at an auction.

There is no mileage limit on the contract as I have a normal HP agreement.

So from a legal point of view it should not affect the decision?
