  • RAC recommended mechanic. Taken money for parts won’t fix car

Oct, car stopped on motorway fast lane. Police pulled it over & I had to pay for a membership for the RAC to recover it to home. Rac guy recommended & provided details of garage with mobile mechanic who would fix it at my home!
Had What’s up conversations with mechanic who came to see it, took my spare key & said he’d have it up n running the following week.
So agreed to pay initial invoice sent for the £800 parts needed.
Two months later after repeated conversations with him & him agreeing but not turning up - I asked him to return my £800
He has read the text two weeks ago but won’t reply or answer phone .
As the RAC guy recommended & provided all his details, I was fully under the impression that it was a RAC approved garage with mobile mechanic.
So I’m £800 down plus £112 RAC membership fee plus an extra £100 a week in train fares ( live outside London ) & an extra 3 hours a day travelling time.
Ive missed Christmas with my family up north & the events I was supposed to go to.
I rang the rac who sounded concerned at first as they had no knowledge of the place their rac guy recommended & went off to check. They then came back to me saying they couldn’t help & just wanted to shut down the call!
Have a car that still doesn’t work & the longer it’s off the road, the more chance of other things seizing (brakes etc as I’ve been told) So I’m absolutely stuck - I haven’t got the funds to buy another car especially with what I’ve paid out & all the extra in train fares etc.
Have I got any redress anywhere? Are the RAC liable in any way?

Sorry - just to clarify - I already had a rac membership. The £112 was the cost of a RAC diagnostic visit to look at the car at my home ! *♀️

      Hi
The RAC have their own mobile mechanics and can provide limited auto repairs on the customer's drive
The RAC technician may have realised that the repairs needed for your car were beyond the scope of the RAC mobile mechanics and recommended another garage and mobile mechanic not affiliated to the RAC
Your contract is either with the mobile mechanic who took your £800 or with the garage that employs this mechanic. Can you tell from the invoice you received and/or from the electronic messages which entity you contracted with?
How did you pay the £800?
