Agreed, but the law does not interfere in private deals.
It is morally wrong to take advantage of a person's lack of knowledge, but that is life and hence it is axiomatic that the buyer beware.

The last time I had that code it turned out to be a faulty battery on a Vauxhall Astra. But it could be anything from sparkplugs to coil packs to a vacuum leak. I also had a Fiat that gave the same symptoms and that was the temperature sensor.

yes, seller says it was fine for 4 years son had it, reliable never broke down, regulkar service although we found in book nothing from 2005? sugested car was tinkered with and no wont refund ... end of? he cant get the busses for the cleaning jobs for the times? so without a car hell have to give it up, unless he buys another ysed one, but they havnt enough money hence sister in lae fawking out the £500

Perhaps they did use it regularly for 4 years and had it serviced (non completion of service history doesn't mean it wasn't serviced.. could have been done by themselves). Possibly they realised it was on its last legs, but they were under no obligation legally to advise a purchaser of that fact.

And sorry to say that to initiate court action would, IMO , only lead to more unrecoverable expense
