  • Electoral role & Council tax linked?

Hi all. First time poster. Complicated situation I am in, but i will just cut to the chase and ask what I basically need to know. I am not on the electoral role and I am currently in a messy debate with my landlord over who pays the council tax (I currently dont pay it because my rental agreement says my council tax is INCLUDED with my rent) Now my landlord is changing his tune saying I should be paying it myself and not him. I need to get myself on the electoral role for legal reasons i know, but i also want to build up a credit score. If i register on the electoral role is this linked in anyway to who is paying the council tax? I am looking into the council tax situation, but In a nut shell, if i register on the electoral role will the council then start sniffing around if i am paying council tax or not?

You don't have to be the council tax payer or even liable to be on the electoral roll, people who have no fixed abode can register for example.

If the council did query it you simply show them a copy of your tenancy agreement and direct them back to the landlord.

There might be for the council to send you out a letter stating that if you need to pay council tax register, however you should already be registered under the bill the landlord is paying along with them as the liable person because you reside at the property.
