  • Confusion with council tax

Hi there so, my mother was on benefits until recently but then she had claimed universal credit, is it normal for her to get sent a notice about paying £900+ for this year?
She was sent a court summons as well.

Is the 900 bill the full council tax bill or does that include her reduction ? Did she change over to UC because she started working ? Presumably she used to get council tax benefit and now won't do as she's changed to UC. Do you know if she
applied for Council Tax support as well as Universal Credit ? https://www.gov.uk/apply-council-tax-reduction and check her local councils website for info.

Best thing would be to give the council a call and explain the situation and find out what she needs to do to stop the liability order being obtained ( normally it's a case of paying it or making an arrangement to pay - but if something has gone wrong and she is entitled to support but isn't getting it they may be able to sort that out )

Any support I provide is offered without liability, if you are unsure please seek professional legal guidance.
