Thank you. It helps and it helps to know I'm not being overly sensitive. I have always been honest and upfront with Santander over the years - if I was about to be made redundant, etc - and feel that they were so quick to close there was no thought other than that. I don't know how long ago the sale completed but have you've been given a final statement by Santander showing where the money went etc.?

Are Rethink still supporting you because their input may be useful if you plan to go down the legal route for compensation if it's advised?

Regarding your ID and preventing potential fraud you could sign up for protective registration with CIFAS - this would mean if anyone ( including ding you) applied for credit using your details they would contact you directly before authorising anything. Have a look on the CIFAS website for details. Costs £25 for two years I think.

Thank you to all. I do still have the support of Rethink and it is they who have mentioned one option of compensation. But that is far in the future for me. I still would like to know why this happened, etc. However they are gathering support also from Shelter and possibly MIND. They too are appalled.

As for the ID, thank you, Amethyst. That is an excellent idea and I will do that immediately.
