    Hi,
You are going to need a meter if you need a supply of gas or electricity.
Unless you are living without these things?
Seeing as it is a council property, it may be that your council terms of tenancy require meters to be installed.
If the utility companies remove the meters, then they will have to re-install them if you decide to move.
So they are not going to do this free of charge.
With any council property, if you do move you may be required to leave it in the same condition as when you moved in.
So my friend, either pay yourself, or put up with them.

do you mean pre-payment meters?? I think MOST energy suppliers charge for their removal (not 100% sure) but it may be worth calling a few to find out

        Hi there,

I would check with the utility company because i was lead to believe they dont charge if you want to change from pre payment to credit and vice versa e-on dont charge for doing as long as you pass credit check

To change from prepayment meter to credit meter, some suppliers do it for free, others charge up to £60.

Moneysupermarket say that British Gas, EoN and EDF Energy will remove the prepay meter for free if you are switching to them - and NPower will if you previously had a credit meter and moved to a property with a prepay meter. So it might be worth giving those companies a call first. Scottish Power charge £45 and SSE charge £52. (tho it may have changed as the article was from 2012)

Personally I prefer having a prepay meter and I've never had any gas or electricity arrears, I just moved to a property that had a prepay meter and although wanted to change at first I've now kept with it since 2008. I much prefer having complete control over the usage of Gas and Electric, knowing exactly where I am, and it definitely teaches the kids that leaving the TV on all night costs money.

              So very true Boss Lady,
I have pre-paid meters, so no nasty bills to worry about.
It seems like the OP hasn't quite made himself clear about the meters.
              Are they pre-paid or not?
Does he not use gas and electric and just wants the meters removed?
              The suspense is killing me.........

lol sorry yes I think there called pre pay meters I have to go to the local shop and put money on the card and insert them into the meters I was thinking of getting rid because I've herd that you pay more on pre pay then standard billing is that right ?

                thanks

                  Re: gas, elc meter

Yes, cheaper deals are available on credit meters, especially if you pay monthly by "direct debit".
However some people prefer the control that they feel prepayment meters give them.
It's very much a personal decision.

We have pre-pay meters here. They were in when we moved into the house last year, and we just kept them - it maybe slightly more expensive (although I think the utility companies SHOULD change that personally :tinysmile_hmm_t2 but we know precisely how much credit we have on the meter and never get an unexpected bill .

I get gas and electricity from British Gas, and I top up my meters via the internet.
BG supplied the card reader and the key reader.
Just plug them into a USB slot and log in to their web site.
Top up any of three amounts.
                      £5.00, £10.00 or £15.00
Never have to bother about going down to the shop
