  • Solicitor consistently rude , can I respond?

I am currently involved in a case where the opposing Solicitor is consistently rude in his correspondence to me, he never says please or thank you, tries to push me around and threatens and basically bullies me and treats me like a lesser being! Up to now I have been nothing but polite to him and compliant with his many requests but my tongue is getting very sore from constantly biting it....or should I say my fingers are twitching badly from refraining from firing back at him via the keyboard what I'd really like to say!

My question is this, am I within my rights to tell him in a nice way that I find his manner terribly rude....I feel like saying 'manners maketh man', or have I to just keep biting my tongue? It may sound like I'm being pathetic, but I dread receiving his letters because his attitude really irks me and then plays on my mind! I have so far kept schtum as should the matter go to Court, I wouldn't want it to look like I was being disrespectful or rude, despite the fact that he is to me.

    Thank you for any advice.

When I was in practice I found it best always to respond courteously, and to stay focussed on the case. More often than not lawyers of the kind you describe are concentrating on being unpleasant and not on the case.

      Hi atticus

Thank you for your response. I think you are absolutely right, this Solicitor's aim seems to just be as unpleasant and rude to me as possible and to belittle me, I have dealt with him for months now and honestly feel the case has not made any progression nor movement apart from lining his pockets! In your opinion , should I just carry on biting my tongue, or should I say something in the hope that we can move forwards positively?

Do you think it will achieve anything?

Probably not as far as his attitude goes but may make me feel a little better, on reflection though I will keep quiet and bear in mind what you said in your first post, thank you very much.

Draft the reply you would like to send but don't send it. Walk away for a few minutes. Then delete the reply. Either send a measured reply, or don't reply. But never send an immediate intemperate reply.
