  • Library staff put hands on me

I've put this in General Issues as I couldn't find one more appropriate
Last Fri i was in a library using a pc. An "additional volunteer" came up behind me unexpectedly and put their hands on my shoulders making me jump and scream out. I was wearing a sleeveless top so there was skin to skin contact.

I asked to talk to senior staff member about this but as none were there they gave me a form which I completed and returned and await a reply. Can I claim compensation from or sue the local authority for upset or assault etc, and if so would the sums involved be worth it? Also if I did this or complain to the police could the library ban me?

With respect how much compo would you expect surely an apology would suffice

I don't know. Maybe it's wishful thinking on my part. But only an apology seems insufficient. I'd never think of even touching a co-worker let alone put my hands on them in an assertive or aggressive way. In this case, I was viewing The Apprentice on iplayer without an earpiece and the staff firmly put hands on me before telling me off. Maybe if I was assured the staff was appropriately dealt with by the library I would be satisfied

It appears that you need to await the outcome of your complaint.
Lawyer (solicitor) - retired from practice, now supervising solicitor in a university law clinic. I do not advise by private message.

Litigants in Person should download and read the Judiciary's handbook for litigants in person: https://www.judiciary.uk/wp-content/..._in_Person.pdf

I'm reasonably happy with the outcome of complaint, copied below. I've erased several words so not to compromise privacy, so apologise for that buti t gives the gist

refer to your complaint regarding an incident at Library.

The complaint was sent to the Manager of the who was involved in the incident and this was the outcome:

The has readily admitted that approached you from behind and did touch your shoulder. However I am completely satisfied that there was no intent of malice or assault and had done this in an attempt to get your attention only. had felt that the media you were playing was disturbing a customer who was helping nearby. does realise that this was an inappropriate approach which led to you being startled.

Going forward I had advised the not to approach customers from any angle that means they cannot be seen, and to refrain from making any physical contact with service users in capacity. Furthermore I had advised that any perceived issues with customers should be referred directly to staff members.

          Yours sincerely,
