  • Significant extra duties with no additional pay

    Hello

I have been carrying out an interim role since January to cover staff illness. It has much greater responsibilities than my contracted role mainly in terms of managing a much larger team. Because I was covering for serious illness, I did this as a favour and was not paid additional salary. I have received plaudits for my performance and it has given me good experience.

My employer now wants to make the role permanent and has offered it to me without my having to apply. It would seem however that there will be no salary increase (to be confirmed). As I have no desire to be exploited, should this be the case: I plan to reject the role without hesitation and possibly withdraw from the interim role with immediate effect.

What could my employer do in retaliation? My existing contracted role i.e. the one I had before the interim role started still exists as do all the duties associated with it. Could I be threatened with redundancy? I realise I'll probably have to move on in the not so distant future as my card will be marked, but can I be dismissed straightaway?

    Thanks in advance

You have the right to refuse anything you want, it is how you go about refusing it that will determine how you get treated.

Don't get me wrong: I'll try to negotiate and say that I'm happy for more responsibilities so long as it's reflected in my remuneration. I'll also point out the logic of getting paid the same for less stress should I not take the role. The director dealing with this has been known to be unreasonable so that approach might not work and I'm not going to budge on the money front.

As a possible alternative to an outright rejection of the position if they do not immediately offer a pay increase, would you consider and therefore be able to suggest that although you have completed 8 months in the role on an interim basis and clearly proved you can to do the job hence you have been offered it permanently that they consider a salary increase after x number of months permanently in the role?

As you say, I've been doing it for 8 months and it has been noticed that I perform well in the role. If they're not going to give me a rise now, they never will. As soon as I agree to the job, my negotiating position has gone.

Re: Significant extra duties with no additional pay

A negotiation at job offer stage if it does not come with an increase and trying to get them to agree one in x number of months permanently in the role would require them to, once agreed, put it in writing as to when that would become effective from and what that salary would be.

Alternatively you say to your employer that you are grateful for the offer and recognition that you are capable of doing a role with more responsibility. However having proved this over 8 months you are disappointed that is has not come with an increase in salary to recognise your performance in the role and to reflect the greater responsibility required of the position and therefore you will be returning to your old position.
