• Company demanding I put work expenses on personal credit card

Hello all

Been employed by the same company for the last 15 years, and as my role is national I have always run up work expenses. I've always been happy to pay for these on my personal credit card as the company would refund me on a weekly basis so I was never running up too high a credit amount.

Recently a new policy was implemented without consultation whereby expenses were only processed monthly. This means that I am now in debt around £2,000 each month. I only have credit cards for work expenses and emergency use, and this effectively now uses up all my credit amounts meaning I have no contingency left for personal emergencies. I am also facing the situation where I cannot perform my job as I've run out of credit on several occasions. I don't like credit cards having had a bad experience in the past and refuse to seek out more credit.

Requests to review my circumstances made to my immediate manager, and their manager have fallen on deaf ears.

Other than just leaving the company and working for someone who treats their employees better, do I have any legal recourse ?

Just an observation I'm afraid, many companies only pay expenses monthly

Is this just mileage or fuel or are there hotels and subsistence expenditure included as well.

I do not think it would be unreasonable to ask for a fuel card. If you request has fallen on deaf ears maybe its time to make it a formal grievance which you could escalate. I would not make it sound like you are angry but that the situation is causing undue hardship and you feel you may end up in serious financial trouble, particularly if for one month they are late paying

Its for fuel, hotels, food and flights. They are asking me to work internationally at the same time as delaying payment of expenses. I don't want to be unreasonable but this is causing me real hardship and I don't know if I can do anything about it.

Kati - who are the experts on this please

I really think it is unreasonable to expect that sort of money to be paid by you upfront.
Maybe Kati will tag some members who have experience in HR etc

When I worked for a company back in the 70's they supplied me and others incurring expenses with company credit and charge cards.
Obviously had to keep receipts and account for spending.
Suggest it to your bosses, after all why should the employees be subsidising the employer(which is what it amounts to)?

I do find it odd, but it some industries this is the norm.

I was in this position a couple of years ago - so after a fairly frank and open discussion with my boss, he arranged for me to receive a £1K advance (my expenses were around £1K per month), repayable if/when I left the business. That fixed things for me instantly.

Worth a try?

Re: Company demanding I put work expenses on personal credit card

While effectively providing interest free credit to your employer may be OK when it's for small amounts on an occasional or weekly basis; it's unreasonable for your employer to expect it for significant sums from one month to the next.

But, you've been doing it weekly for years, it's become part of your contractual terms. However, that doesn't mean that you have to agree to extend it to monthly.

As their ears aren't working you might try their eyes instead.
Write (email/whatever) stating that you don't agree to the change. Explain that you can't, and shouldn't be expected to subsidise them/provide them with interest free credit in this manner.
Generally employers are more likely to respond to documents than conversations if only because of the old adage 'if it ain't written down it didn't happen'.

Worried Dad's suggestion is a good one. Or a company credit card or whatever solution you or they can come up with that's acceptable to you.

If you don't get a solution within a month escalate the matter up the management line with a formal grievance.
