  • Terminating contract and manager gossiping beforehand

    Hello

Can anyone offer any help please since I don't think what happened to my husband is very professional.

Basically he's been off work on long term sickness due to an accident which happened at work - (although the manager flatly denies this). Anyway, my husband was called into work for a meeting, no mention of being accompanied by a union rep/colleague, and was told his contract would be terminated.

The thing which annoyed me the most was the fact that before my husband went into his meeting some of the other workers were talking to him and told him that he was going to be losing his job. Surely this is against some sort of confidential trust between employer and employee?

Does anyone have any idea about this because I think he should complain but I wanted to know if there are some sort of rules which should be adhered to by the employer? Surely it's not on to be discussing private matters about employees before they have been informed?

    Thanks

You are quite right, it's very poor conduct indeed .
That said, complaining about it to this employer isn't likely to do anything but add frustration to the existing annoyance.

How long did he work there?

Almost 20 years. I work at the same place so I have to bite my tongue.

Are they terminating his employment because of his long term sickness absence?

Yes as it's been over a year. I thought it a bit harsh to be honest as other people have taken around 3 years before being terminated because the company wanted to give them plenty of chance to have surgery/ treatment. It's taken a year for the NHS to start treating him because they are so busy.

It seems as though he's finally getting help and now his manager wants shot of him.

          Thanks
