• Broken foot bone just before i was meant to start!!!! advice needed

Hi, i have joined this forum in hope of finding some answers as i cant find anything online about this.

I was meant to start work this friday but i have broken my metatarsil, Doctors have advised to rest with foot elevated. This is my first job and i am unsure of what to do, i dont want to lose it before its even started. I should be able to walk again bearably in two weeks or so with the assistance of crutches. The nature of my work does not involve too much walking although i am in extreme pain at the moment.

My question is what should i do/say to my employer and can they fire me for something out of my control.

thank you for any help anyone has to offer.

the first two weeks are important as they are my training weeks

What awfully bad luck!

Is the training the type of thing you could do at home like learning policies and procedures?

Well, personally, if the job is office based then the training will probably be sitting at a desk most of the time. I think your best bet is to contact your employer and explain what's happened and that you hope you can work something out with them so you can still attend - like reasonable adjustments - so sitting with your foot up etc .... ( of course that relies on you being able to get to work in the first place so don't offer if it is just not possible, or if you are in far too much pain to do that anyway ). If it is a large employer they might have a second intake you could defer to. Really I don't think there is very much else you can do than contact them and have a chat.

All you can do is tell them what's happened and ask if there's anything that you can do from home while you're healing. You never know, there could be something and it shows that you are trying.
Otherwise, you can only hope that they'll be willing to wait because, unfortunately, Yes they could fire you before you started if they want to.

I have to agree with all of the comments above. Ultimately it is down to your employer, and the best thing to do is discuss the issue with them.

If the training is not too time consuming and/or costly to the employer, the employer may allow you to defer your start date and complete the training on a one-to-one basis. Alternatively, as Amethyst said, if it's a large employer with an ongoing recruitment scheme, the employer may defer your start date to the next intake.

Failing these options, the employer may terminate your contract on grounds of capability, i.e. you cannot complete the training, and you cannot do the job without completing the training.
