  • Hospitality Industry - Exec Chef Reporting Less Hours Than Time Actually Worked

    Hi all,

My partner works as a sous chef in a reputable and well known restaurant. As with many in the industry, he works long hours, usually from 9am - 12:00am 5-6 days (sometimes 7) days a week.

While there's all sorts of issues, the main thing is that the executive chef is changing the hours on the timesheets to both A. make it seem that the kitchen staff are taking 2 hours/day and B. reducing their total hours worked in a week. Thus they are actually working for free for at least 2 hours per day, each day.

This means I'm having a difficult time both proving that that they are violating the minimum wage laws as well as the general labour laws around break entitlement and 11 hours between shifts etc.

Any ideas on how I can get the information I need to prove these violations?

Contact ACAS for advice on what to do about this exploitation.......

You can also call an Acas helpline adviser on 0300 123 1100 (8am-8pm Monday to Friday and 9am-1pm Saturday).

When you fill in the timesheet photograph it so if there are alterations they wil show up . Also Unioise get reveryone in the site to join . Go round as many sites as possible and get people to join . Organised labour and collective bargaining is the way to go .

Fantastic, many thanks for the advice. I've been trying to arrange an appointment with the CAB but their hours absolutely clash with my working hours - good to hear of something holding Saturday hours, even only if by phone!

          Agree 100%,
but unfortunately no one wants to make waves of be identifiable in reporting this to avoid tainting future job prospects in this "everyone knows everyone" industry. I've definitely got a fight on my hands!

I think your photo idea is a good one though - I'll need all the proof I can get!
