    A few minutes early?????

If so completely illegal. No if, no buts. Even if you were a few minutes late they could only dock you for time you were not there.

Care to say what agency this is? I'd love to hear its a big one.

edit - this is why I hate agencies. There customers are the employers, so they treat the workers like filth. More of them need suing. And I've done a bit of agency work (and even need offered a few jobs as a recruitment consultant).

Just to add they are not actually leaving the premises or even the shop floor they are just not picking another trip up on the pick system as they finish at 05:30 even if they stop at 05:28 and have not achieved the recommended shift target they are sometimes loosing 15 min's I even seen one guy who had only been there 2 weeks loose 25 min's for underachieving the guideline quota and logging of early.

I remember when I was on a clock (long time ago!). Late or early clocking on or off was dealt with in increments of 15 minutes loss of wages. I think it will be legal as you are contracted to work between certain times.

It was the same when I worked on the production line in a cheese factory - increments of 15 mins docked (and I think paid, but was quite some time ago now). At the end of the day, if you want to pull the stunt of finishing early, you make yourself look busy and then clock out on the dot - a bit silly to show you're finishing early.

Agree. My OH has 15 mins docked too on clock system.

This maybe sounds like a factory line where if you start a new 'pick' rotation you have to complete it which maybe takes 20 mins to complete, so they are clocking off (ie stopping the rotation) 2 mins early else they'd be having to work 18 mins over ? Would they be paid for that time? (just working out why they don't just hover by the clock off machine till it pings past the hour)

Yes, we weren't allowed home in my cheese factory days till you'd finished the days run, but one run took a long time. I think if we'd have had the option we'd often have made the penultimate run slower (Oops, the labelling machine jammed, oh dear!) and finished early. Sadly we didn't have the option, we worked till it was finished.

It was then I learned the same block of cheese goes to about five different supermarkets, just in different packaging.

And along the same lines: the same loaves go into multiple outer packaging, from the top of the range to the economy version.
