  • Employer confidentiality?

    Hi,

My father has been in his current position at a large oil company for around 8 years. Recently the nephew of a H&S director started work in his area. Since beginning in November this employee has shown no desire to pull his weight. Sits on his phone all day, leaves early and has been caught lying about hospitalisation to get time off.

There have been numerous informal complaints given by every member of the team and finally my father went to the office of two high ranking managers within the company and told them that this couldn't continue, that something had to be done and if nothing was he would have to seek employment elsewhere.

As this employee was working through an agency, Both managers assured my father that security would be there tomorrow morning and they would inform him he was no longer required (as i said this was not the first complaint about him, only the first formal one.) The employee has been arrested several times for assaults etc. Hence the need for security.

Upon arriving at work yesterday my father discovered that the employee was given two weeks paid holiday and was told each and every word my father had told these managers in confidence (My father overheard him telling another employee word for word what he had said in this meeting)

This brings me to my question. Are employers obligated to keep these meetings confidential? Is there any recourse we can follow? My father feels he can no longer work in that environment and I feel as if he was clearly wronged.

Anyway thank you for reading. I hope This wasn't as confusing as I think it might have been!

Your father should speak to ACAS ( http://www.acas.org.uk/index.aspx?articleid=2042 ) as soon as possible to find out his rights and the procedures the employers should have followed following his complaint about the other employee. Thank you he will be phoning at the weekend.

Do you have any thoughts on the matter? I'm interested in opinions etc. Whether I'm just overreacting or something.

      Thanks.
