I think I am going to be investigated and fired after a service of 30 years. Can I resign with immediate effect when I receive the notice of charge sheet or is it better to do it now before everything starts?

Do you feel your Immediate dismissal ( gross misconduct ?) would be justified ?

I'm moving your thread to the employment forum ( done) - you will need to register ( don't use your real name as a username ) to reply, and tagging Ula for you. As far as I am aware yes you can resign but the investigation may still proceed and show on your employment record ( eg for instance if you needed a future reference )*
