I did courses in animal health and psychology when I was a single mum in my 20s - there's always something to learn, and always a way to do it :tinysmile_grin_t:

Re: Too old to learn?!? AT 23!!!!

Im 43 and an un undergraduate. Didn't get the chance when I was 17/18 as no colleges near me back then, only 6th form and I didn't want to do A levels. Teachers were of the elitist type, you either were academically bright or the other, i had a good primary school so i thought until i got to high school, I was the only boy (even child) to leave a small county primary school (30 kids in total!) and go to the high school..i was alone and bullied in 1st year..eventually made friends but its stayed with me for life and confidence in the workplace isn't something I have. Thanks to the OU screwing up my finance, I have to take this academic year off and switch degrees again next year. Or leave the OU completely and go to a local brick uni...(Hull) and continue...

I've been an undergrad in my 50's and a postgrad student doing a thesis for Ph. D in my 20's there certainly is a huge amount anyone can learn at any age the secret I think is Wanting to Do It not making it a chore.

Re: Too old to learn?!? AT 23!!!!

I left school, and home, after my GCSE's (I signed up for A Levels but didn't tell mum - wanted it to be a surprise - and her BF told me that I could leave if I wasn't staying in school so I moved out ). My first child was born when I was 19 (2000), my second when I was 20 (2001) ... I didn't get to do ANY extra education until my boys were older.

I now have diplomas in "Animal Care and Health" and "Animal Psychology" (both passed with distinction) and have completed other courses too.

You're never too old to learn something new ... and I'm 34

The problem is now that the amount of debt anyone who wants to start a degree will be in is enormous . It is of course too late to apply for this year so next year someone starting a 3 year degree course will end up in over £50K of debt and that is if they qualify for funding. It is fantastic though that people who do not have an O level or GCSE to their name can do and get a good degree from a good university at whatever age

Eventually that will lead to people just choosing to study those subjects that are likely to earn them more money so they can repay those debts, back to the old days when everyone who went to university did so to become a doctor, lawyer or accountant, I guess these days you could add computer science. It will be only rich kids with trust funds who will study humanities, art, etc.

It may well be a better option to skip a degree altogether and go for a professional qualification instead, the sort of thing you can study while you work and in many cases your employer would fund.

It's rather tragic to start adult life with £50k worth of debt! May be OK if you land a job as an investment banker or something $imi£ar but that will be a very small percentage.

As someone who started their degree at 50 it is a nice feeling to be admired.

There is no age limit for student loans for tuition fees, only for the maintenance element the upper age limit is 60.
