I’ve lost a case and the defendants solicitors have said I need to pay £800 costs. I’ve sud throughout I couldn’t pay and I made an application for help with fees which has been successful but I still have to offer to pay back in instalments. I don’t know where I’m up to. If I pay in instalments will I still have a ccj? Where does my help with fees come from when they’ve said I’m eligible?

It's not clear what type of claim you made and if it was on the small claims track or something else.
Have you received the court order that says you must pay the defendant's costs?
It's irrelevant that you can't afford to pay, that's the risk you take on if you want to bring a claim. Help with fees only applies to application or claim fees, not a costs order at the end of the hearing.
As far as I'm aware, CCJs only apply to a claim or counterclaim, it doesn't extend to an order for costs.

Acknowledge Claim - within 14 days from Service
Defend Claim - within 28 days from Service (IF you acknowledged in time)
If you fail to Acknowledge the claim you may have a default judgment awarded against you, likewise, if you fail to enter your defence within 28 days from Service.
