  • 15yr old debt being chased

Hi, I am new to this and would very much appreciate some help. I have received a letter from Cabot with 2 debts that are over 15yrs old. In that time they have never been acknowledged or any monies paid. I ended a bad marriage many years ago, moved away from the area. I have now received a letter re the debt saying they have purchased it and can confirm my new address, also in my new married name. I have no idea what to do.also scared to tell my partner.

I guess somebody with more knowledge than me will advise you to totally ignore and do not reply, I guess they are trying it on as a debt that old is not enforceable.

Statute barred debts | Time limits for recovering - Nation

If as it may seem no acknowledgement of these alleged debts then statute of limitations kicks in i.e.:- 6 years England/Wales or 5 Years Scotland> that is rule,

if this is the case send - get proof of posting and keep copies on file of everything just in case,

It's up to you, if the facts given are correct, they really have 'nowhere' to go with this. Email it to them, (but don't provide address or other contact details).

I would very much like to thank this forum and all that I have gained from it. I feel a lot more confident confronting this matter, feeling I have searched and done my homework. I have paid for a CCJ search, as the debt is over 15 yrs old. It came up clear, so I know that there is nothing lurking there! I also know that no payment or contact has been made for just over 17years. I am sure this is far from over…. but your form has given me confidence and I don’t feel quite so intimidated. So feel I can reply to them with a bit more knowledge behind me.

I filed a complaint to Cabot , stating statue barred. They have said it will take approximately 8 weeks for them to look into it. Just wanted to update the thread .
