Statute Barred

Hi. I was assaulted by a man who I describe as a vicious thug. He has attacked me repeatedly over the period of three years. He even attacked his girl friend by head butting her. His arrest for his latest attack on me was on 27th July 2020. He had previously attacked me in September of 2018. Even though I had the injuries and his DNA on my blood stained hanky the police took no further action. He has been in prison from that date up to the 21st of September 2020 when he stands trial. I was originally told by the police that all previous crimes would be looked into. Now I am told that the case in September cannot be addressed in court as it is statute barred. How long can a case be? Even if it is two years, he was arrested on 27th July this year which is less than two years. I could do with some help her. Also I am told by the police that they cannot give me the names of my own witnesses because of the data protection act.
