  • KIA PPF Filter issue

Hi! I hope someone can give me a little advice. I brought a used Kia sportage in April 2024 on a PCP contract. End of October 2023 I have a warning “keep driving to regenerate exhaust filter” which I did. This remained on until I took my car to be serviced at my local Kia dealership in December. The service department advised this was very common and the car needs to be “driven like you’ve stollen it” regularly and have long journeys to burn the soot out of the vehicle will go in to limp mode. I was going on holiday and needed the car so I had to pay £300 to get this rectified by the garage. Yesterday (25th Feb) not quite 3 months later I get the same notification on the car. I rang the dealership where I had my service and expressed my utter disgust that it had happened so soon given I’d been away for a week and it had been on long journeys etc. they advised new guidance from Kia to clear the fault which I will post a picture of. I did this recommended advice for 2 hours and burned over 170 miles worth of petrol and it hasn’t cleared. I have been researching forums as you do and this is a massive issue Kia and Hyundai have with their vehicles and many customers are complaining about the same thing. I am now having to ring the garage and fork out a further £300 to get it cleared but for how long?! It appears these vehicles are only fit for purpose driving in specific ways and for distance, not local commutes. Shopping etc. my question is, do I have an argument to approach the dealership that sold me the car and now reject the sale as “not fit for purpose”? This car is no use nor ornament to me keep doing this and I can’t afford to keep getting it rectified. Has I known that the vehicle required that kinda lifestyle at the outset, I wouldn’t have purchased it. I can’t trade it in at present for something else as my finance is upside down and I’m now owing more than the value. I am completely stuck with a car that has this issue and no way out.
thank you so much for any advice you can give!

      Hi
      Welcome to LB

Reading forums it does seem this is a common problem with the newer Sportage and Tuscon and Kia is aware of the problem

I know that motor industry advice is to avoid diesel cars if the customer intends driving frequent short journeys. I thought petrol cars were meant for these type of journeys.

If the dealer didn't advise you about this problem and the need to drive long fast journeys then you may have a claim under the Consumer Rights Act for compensation, the car being unsatisfactory quality and not fit for purpose.

The finance company is the owner of the car so you should write to the company stating the problems you have had and are still having with the car, unexpected additional cost (fuel, regen) and that you want compensation or the car replaced with one that is fit for purpose (short journeys). Send a copy of the letter to the dealer
