Action against dentist

I'm in a dispute with a private dentist which may result in my having to issue a letter before action and then a small claim.
I vaguely recall being told that I would need to sue the dentist personally not the dental practice where he works.
Is this correct?

The dental practice may have a non-delegable duty to provide its patients with reasonable skill and care, that expected from a qualified dentist.

Dentists are usually self employed independent contractors not employees of the practice but if in doubt name them both as joint defendants.

It's for a failed denture made and fitted only last March which the dentist says I'll have to pay for the repair.
