What is procedure to request a Single Joint Expert?

Do I need to make an application to the court? Or do I just state in my Particulars of Claim that I would require an SJE to diagnose the building defect?

As pt2537 you need the survey report to be able to quantify your claim.
If an experts report is then required the court will so instruct.

My main concern is, am I able to reclaim my surveyor expenses if I win? Say I spend £500 on a surveyor.

Should I send my Letter of Claim first, advising the defendant that I plan to hire a surveyor?

you can claim all damages arising out of the problem, and this will include the cost of a surveyor if that is necessary.
