Hi everyone,
I had a distressing experience at Lidl yesterday, resulting in my ban from the store. I live in a fairly rough part of London and think my local store is having a big crime crackdown.
While using the self-checkout, I left a punnet of strawberries and a chicken salad on the weighing/scanning section. It was all a bit mindless, I was in a rush with headphones in, but ultimately I bagged up these without paying. I moved to the packing area (aware that I had been flustered at the till and wanted to check my shopping!)
BUT security stopped me and immediately began a prosecution process. Panicked & shaken, I fully cooperated, provided my ID, and offered to pay for the missed items, but they refused. The security personnel spoke limited English, so I struggled to get clear answers about what was happening. I was told the police could be called and that I’d get a criminal record IF I didn't provide my ID. I did so, they took my name & address and signed a document saying I am banned for 2 years from the store.
I have a few concerns:
1) Will the store security alert other local stores about me? (I have visions of every shop in town trawling through CCTV to track my previous visits // be aware of me in future)
...Would this be a GDPR breach?
2) I was told I’m banned from this Lidl store—does this typically apply to all Lidl locations?
3) I was not told about receiving a letter. But I should expect one...right?
Any reassurance would be sooo appreciated.
