  • Lidl ban. Expecting a letter...?

    Hi everyone,

I had a distressing experience at Lidl yesterday, resulting in my ban from the store. I live in a fairly rough part of London and think my local store is having a big crime crackdown.

While using the self-checkout, I left a punnet of strawberries and a chicken salad on the weighing/scanning section. It was all a bit mindless, I was in a rush with headphones in, but ultimately I bagged up these without paying. I moved to the packing area (aware that I had been flustered at the till and wanted to check my shopping!)

BUT security stopped me and immediately began a prosecution process. Panicked & shaken, I fully cooperated, provided my ID, and offered to pay for the missed items, but they refused. The security personnel spoke limited English, so I struggled to get clear answers about what was happening. I was told the police could be called and that I’d get a criminal record IF I didn't provide my ID. I did so, they took my name & address and signed a document saying I am banned for 2 years from the store.

    I have a few concerns:
    1) Will the store security alert other local stores about me? (I have visions of every shop in town trawling through CCTV to track my previous visits // be aware of me in future)
...Would this be a GDPR breach?

    2) I was told I’m banned from this Lidl store—does this typically apply to all Lidl locations?

    3) I was not told about receiving a letter. But I should expect one...right?

Any reassurance would be sooo appreciated.

I haven't seen any other cases involving Lidl using civil recovery for shoplifting but it is a possibility, if you receive anything, come back here for further advice - which will be to ignore any demand letters.

The name and address was requested to keep a record of your two year ban, it would not necessarily mean you are banned from all stores, but it would not be considered a data breach as Lidl would be using your data legitimately for security purposes.

Personally, I detest the self service tills as they seem to have increased incidents like this. You did not attempt to leave the store, I would be asking for CCTV (under GDPR) and sending an formal explanation of the event and ask them to reconsider.
"Although scalar fields are Lorentz scalars, they may transform nontrivially under other symmetries, such as flavour or isospin. For example, the pion is invariant under the restricted Lorentz group, but is an isospin triplet (meaning it transforms like a three component vector under the SU(2) isospin symmetry). Furthermore, it picks up a negative phase under parity inversion, so it transforms nontrivially under the full Lorentz group; such particles are called pseudoscalar rather than scalar. Most mesons are pseudoscalar particles." (finally explained to a captivated Celestine by Professor Brian Cox on Wednesday 27th June 2012 )

Send him a Letter of Complaint, explain what happened, the distress it's caused you and
what you want him to do. If they've got security, part of their job is to listen, they
clearly didn't want to or know how to.

Thanks for responses. I was initially tempted to complain but now I just want to steer clear of any further stress. Is it likely then that from this incident the Lidl store security has alerted the rest of security in the shopping centre? I worry about shopping locally now as I feel all eyes will be on me.

Wait and see if Lidl send you a letter confirming the ban. If it says nothing about other shops in the same shopping centre then it applies to Lidl only.

As far as what is permitted by Data Protection law (GDPR) have a look at this page on the Information Commissioner's Office website.
