  • Are the Royal Family value for money

No sarcastic remarks please, valid debate.

Seeing the state opening of Parliament by the queen in all its regalia this morning, i had rather a big lump in my throat in this time of austerity, she has a crown on her head worth a million pounds.

I THOUGHT I WOULD POSE SOME QUESTIONS

1/ How much revenue does the Royal Family bring into the UK each year through tourism.
2/ How much does it cost to keep the royal family in all its splendor each year

3/ lets take the royal family out of the equation on this.
how much money will natural tourism bring to the UK each year if we did not have a royal family

    Sensible factual replies please

No one can say for sure how much is involved in any of the 3 questions,
Remember the royal assets were stolen from the people over the years and charlie unlike otheres tells the inland revenue how much tax HE wants to pay

That is the problem i am having

I cannot research any official accounts

Its all hearsay statistics with no links to official receipts, debits, etc

We can approximate how much revenue came into the UK through tourism, but how much was due to the Royal Family against natural tourism

Re: Are the Royal Family value for money

Remember the Royalists will claim they are value for money and produce figures showing how good they are and the money they bring in ,anti royalists will spout figures showing they are not value for money and how little difference it would be to tourism cash if they went

France hasn't had a royal family for yonks and their palaces still bring in revenue. The biggest fans of the royal family, their trappings and their doings, appear to be the Americans - and look what they did just to get rid of them!

I'm with Sue Townsend all the way....

Google this, I was looking for the civil list I had no idea it had been scrapped, it is 2011 but I should imagine the figures are still pretty similar I also would think that the information would be publicly available.

How is the Royal Family currently funded?

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh receive an annual Civil List grant from the government to the monarch to meet the expenses of acting as Head of State. This was fixed by the Chancellor at £7.9 million for 2011, a figure unchanged for more than a decade. Separate grants are paid to cover the cost of running the Royal household, set for 2011 at £22 million. The Queen will receive a one-off £1 million supplement in 2012 to help pay for diamond jubilee celebrations.

I personally think getting rid of the Royal family could bring in more revenue by opening Buck House and all the other 'royal' residencies to the public. Charge a tenner a visit. Plus cut off all the royal 'hangers on' and free loaders. And off course pawn the royal jewels!!
They were out to get me!! But now it's too late!!

I think 'Pomp' is something we excel at and to be honest nowadays we excel at very little else.
I think our leisure industry even in these crap times is on the up in some respects.
So as far as foreign visitors are concerned and I think there are many who love what the royals and their history offer, can spend as much as they like for me.
Am not too sure ( and I am kidding) that many foreign visitors would come over here for a beach holiday, skiing holiday, total rest holiday, but as far as history, lovely countryside and if you ignore the pillocks that run the country, then they can have a jolly good time imho. I myself have only visited London once as a few on here well know I cant wait to go back as there is so much to see and do and most of it imho is down to the Royal family past and present.
So in brief I am all for the Royals and I do believe that in their own way are more down to earth than we think.

Ask yourself this, what is the number one tourist destination

                      It is France

A high proportion is visiting its regal past such as the palace of Versailles

Their is nothing stopping tourists visiting places like Hampton court etc, i object to the state paying to keep a family in extravagance when people are going to food banks

Do we really need a sitting monarch and her vastly extended family kept in luxury. Keep the buildings yes, not the family

I pay more council tax than the queen

She is worth billions and one of her main government orders was clamp down on tax evasion

I'm worth billions in my own mind but ultimately I am not worth as much as is thought which may be similar to herself
