  • Company demanding fee for service not provided

I live in Prague for a bit over 2 years now. and just today a letter from the company Česká Televize arrived according to which we have to pay a monthly fee for owning a TV receiver (přijímač).
We have a TV, but we only use it to watch Netflix through a Play Station. Now, Česká Televize demands that we pay the ammount equivalent to all the months not payed, which is quite a lot of money. We do not have any antena, we have never even tuned the TV channels and never used it in any way. It is basically a big screen for us. Basically, we do not have any relationship with this company and it does not provide any service to us, but now it is asking money from us!

As a curiosity, is it possible that this is legal? That a company that provides no service demands payment, and on top of that it does it all at once without previous warning?

    Thank you for any help!
    Diego

Does anyone here know anything about Czech law, particularly relating to licensing of television receiving equipment?
Lawyer (solicitor) - retired from practice, now supervising solicitor in a university law clinic. I do not advise by private message.

Litigants in Person should download and read this: https://www.judiciary.uk/wp-content/..._in_Person.pdf

      Info here: https://poplatky.ceskatelevize.cz/en/household

You must pay the TV licence fee even if you use your TV receiver only to watch content on commercial platforms such as YouTube, Netflix, Apple TV, Amazon prime, HBO, etc.

In the Uk you only need a tv licence to watch live programmes on any online tv service such as ITVX, Channel 4, Amazon Prime Video, Now or Sky Go. You don't need a TV licence if you only ever watch on demand programmes apart from on BBC iPlayer.

So in the Uk you would not need a tv licence to watch Netflix. My daughter has a smart tv with Netflix built in and only subscribes to Netflix, so she doesn't need and hasn't got a tv licence
