  • Megabus failed to notify me about insurance

    Hi y'all. Quick question.

A few months ago I took a bus and discovered a zip had broken on my hold bag - and I was missing a small bag of dirty laundry.

I called Megabus the next morning and they contacted lost and found. It was never recovered.

I have today discovered that optional insurance was somehow included on the price of my ticket - including for luggage.

However, I had no idea. This was not mentioned in my calls to Megabus, and as I did not know about this the day after my items went missing ,when I first contacted them, I cannot now claim as I had ot report to the police within 24 hours.

I was not sent any policy documents or a policy number for this optional insurance, in fact the only reference to it is one line on my booking confirmation, and no info how to make a claim, etc.

My question therefore is are Megabus liable here for not checking this when I called them and notifying me?

        Hello

I don't think Megabus is liable for not checking, but could be responsible for failing to give you sufficient information about making a claim, and if it was something added automatically but not brought to your attention, then it ought to have been, particularly if it was an insurance product.

What exactly does the insurance say? Are you trying to hold them responsible for your broken zip?

I think that the zip was broken by the rough treatment of the driver who loaded it in, and I wonder if I can now claim that my inability to now make a claim was due to their maladministration.

I believe I selected this insurance when booking the ticket, somehow unaware of such.

The only references to insurance on the tcket are
          Domestic Insurance: £1.50
And the line below 'Additional products on this ticket'
          Domestic Insurance

Thank you for purchasing travel insurance

There is NO further info, I was sent NO policy docs, or policy number, or details on how to claim.

And I would think that checking if a customer bought your optional insurance would be the first thing they should have checked?

So I've tried make a test booking but up until the point of registering/logging in, there's no mention of insurance.

On the help section, there is a Q&A that suggests Megabus purchases insurance and limits their liability to £500 but according to your previous post your booking information has a purchase value. Do you remember adding this insurance to your order?

Whichever is the case, I think at the very least Megabus ought to have provided you with insurance information if it was added to your booking, whether by yourself or automatically. I don't think they could simply rely on the fact that you missed the window if you weren't made award of the conditions. So I would say before you make yourself look silly, double check any booking confirmations and check whether there is reference to insurance, just in case you missed it.

That said, is it really worth arguing over? You'd have to prove some way that the driver was being rough with your bag and even if he/she did throw it onto the bus, would that have caused your zip to break or become damaged and result in clothing to fall out?

                Thanks rob

There is the following info in the booking confirmation:
                Domestic Insurance: £1.50
And the line below 'Additional products on this ticket'
                Domestic Insurance

Thank you for purchasing travel insurance

There is NO further info, I was sent NO policy docs, or policy number, or details on how to claim.

I think they have now stopped adding it, but at the time it is something you would have selected when booking.

I am curious now whether you think the above is sufficient to tell me my rights as per this insurance?

Only one way to find out and that's to write to Megabus and see what their response is.

If you want my view, not worth the hassle over some items of clothing unless we are talking thousands.
