  • Gender Identity - Gym Changing Rooms

There is an issue in my local gym regarding gender identify in the ladies' changing room.

Essentially a male, who identifies as a woman, is using the ladies' changing room. A number of people have reported this to the management at the gym because this person walks around completely naked in the ladies' changing room, but they have stated they are unable to do anything.

For all intents and purposes, this individual is legally a man. However he chooses to live his life as a woman by wearing women's clothes, makeup etc.

I understand that this is a delicate situation for the gym to handle, however I am surprised at their reluctance to do anything.

Has anyone else come across this situation?

Does your gym have a policy in place regarding gender identity and changing room useage? Normally the policy will say if someone identifies as a woman they are entitled to use the 'female' changing area if they'd feel uncomfortable using the 'male' facilities.

However respect and sensitivity should work both ways - from what you have said it's no issue that they use the 'female' changing area, just the wandering about naked issue ? Has anyone had a chat with them to say it's just making some of the ladies a little uncomfortable ( just the naked roaming with bits out bit not the trans bit ) - rather than 'reporting' to the gym.

There is some information and guidance from the Equality and Human Rights Commission here https://www.equalityhumanrights.com/...vity-providers - although I have to say, I don't think it's entirely helpful for the situation you describe. Your gym may find it helpful to speak with them though if they are uncertain - Equality Advisory and Support Service Phone: 0808 800 0082
