  • Chronic renal Failure , Dialysis & getting benefits

My partner is on dialysis 3 times a week now as the home one didn't work for him. He is currently on ESA & on £71.40 PW. He has already had 2 transplants & his health is not good as well as angina, ashma DVT & depression. He is now on his 28th week on the lower amount of ESA as they have lost the previous 2 questionnaires. He has applied for PIP which is coming up to 6 months waiting for a medical assessment. I have had to give up work at Christmas to look after him so we are now both living on £71.40 & are struggling so much waiting for the benefits we think we are entitled to surely it is not right & no amount of calls to different departments seems to get us anywhere !!!!!! PLEASE HELP

I'm not a benefits expert but as I understand it he should be able to add you to his ESA claim - the couples rate for 2015/16 is £114.85 and he may be able to get a disability premium which for couples ranges from £22.60 - £123.70, I have no idea what the cirteria are for those premiums.

If you spend more than 35 hrs pw caring for him you may qualify for carers allowance at £62.10.

If you rent you may get Housing Benefit and you may also get Council Tax Reduction.

That is just off the top of my head - best thing you could do is get yourself to a CAB - preferably one with a welfare rights specialist.

Hi Andy, Preston is in Lancashire PR2 9HT. We are on Prepayment meters so have to pay as we go. There is a renal social worker but he never gets back to calls & is useless with any information. BKPA have been really good & have allowed us a new oven as ours was not working. Its the system that is so hard as until you have the medical for PIP ( 6 months ) you can not get anything else !! Are you on HD or PD ?

HD for five years, transplant lasted ten, CAPD for six, then back on HD.
Sorry to hear about your social worker, mine is really good, I have her email, and she always gets back within a day or so perhaps yo should ask to be transfered to another, has she offered any help regarding benefits?
