    Re: disability and atos

I started this thread because of my brother.
He is younger than me but has multiple problems as a result of a pituitary tumour.
This has affected all his hormone balance and he has multiple medications, he has an operation which was to remove what they could of this tumour and to insert a stent as he had adult hydrocephalus as a result.
it also affected his sight, which was never very good as he had already had a retinal detachment and is now registered partily sighted.
However he was "lucky" in that he had a desk job with HMRT and continued to work until about five years ago, he was able to get a "medical" retirement and would have been He would be able to retire anyway this year as he was sixty in July.
He lived with my Mum and when she passed away he sold the house and now has a rented flat.
Earlier this year he took himself to the local A and E with chest pain, sent home, had more pain so went again, told him it was angina and that he would have to make an appointment with the cardiac team via his GP.
At the local hospital the wait was up to twenty weeks, so his GP sent him to another "local" hospital.
In June he went for a scan and they kept him in, he spent his birthday in hospital and was then transfered to yet nother hospital and had by-pass surgery.
They recommended that the landlords convert his bath to a walk in shower, he had to go for an assessment centre and was refused!
The Cardiac rehabilitation nurse is still trying to overturn this for him.he e-mailed me yesterday and he has had a letter regarding his disability benefits they want him to have an assessment.

A lot of the assessors are not doctors. Atos prefers the term 'healthcare professional', as that takes in chiropodists and the like. Atos sends them on a 'disability assessment' training course and they come back 'qualified' to pass decisions on all manner of medical conditions.

There is only one supplier of this 'training course'.

      Atos itself.

Did try and post this before but it didn't come through. Dogtired - it rings dreadful bells (re my son with severe learning disabilities) and others I have met through him. ATOS needs to be squashed, it really does - but how do we do it?

Thank you labman will send him this .
What makes it worse is that we moved from Cheshire to Norfolk and i have been unable to afford to go back to see for myself how he is, i have a feeling he is only telling half the story.
